Trench coats will forever be a favourite of mine because they instantly make an outfit look put-together and polished somehow – a simple T-shirt and jeans combination suddenly becomes a chic Parisian affair…

Most probably because they are one of those structured pieces that hold the magical power to bring any old outfit together – no matter how slap dash it might be. For this reason alone, they will always be one of those pieces that I’m happy to invest in. However, I really don’t think that the perfect trench coat has to cost the earth…

For some time now I’ve been lusting after a vintage Burberry trench – the newer ones tend to be a bit too slimline for my personal taste, and I also can’t picture myself spending big bucks on something I’ve likely to stain with pasta sauce at some point down the line…

As much as I love a nice quality piece, a girl has to live within her means and be sensible when it counts. No designer piece is worth living off canned soup for a week – trust me, I personally feel as though vintage always fills that designer shaped hole that I can sometimes fall down. Plus, you get something with a bit of history that you’re not as scared to wear…

With this in mind, I stopped stalking the Burberry website and decided to log onto my Depop app for the first time in a long while. I find it a bit frustrating to use if I’m being honest, but it’s great when you know exactly what you’re looking for. I typed in ‘vintage Burberry’ and a whole array of beautiful trench coats popped up. I think this one cost me just over a hundred english pounds with postage included…

Thank you vintage Burberry gods for answering my prayers. (That’s if it’s real of course, otherwise don’t ever call again).

All jokes aside, it seems to be real from what I can tell – it’s quite a heavy jacket and all the labels are right where they should be. It’s amazing quality and I can’t wait to get it professionally dry cleaned to freshen it up for Spring (peak exciting times over here). The moral of the story? Sometimes looking a little harder and waiting a little longer pays off for your wardrobe. Whilst I’m happy to invest in designer pieces where I see fit, I really didn’t want to spend a fortune on a trench coat that I’ll only make use of in Spring. The fit and shape of this one couldn’t be more perfect, and I’m so glad I stumbled across it. Savvy shopping doesn’t have to mean the fast and cheap version – it can be sustainable and affordable…
