Alice Catherine Alice Catherine

The past few weeks have been absolutely freezing – the type of weather that encourages me to abandon all sense of personal style, and just opt for the cosiest layers possible. It’s been a real challenge to put outfits together that feel ‘like me‘ whilst preventing my limbs from turning a deathly shade of blue at the same time…

Whilst layering sounds like nothing particularly groundbreaking – it can sometimes be difficult to find the right pieces that work together without causing you to look like you’re just wearing everything in your wardrobe…

This year I’m really into layering blazers together with turtlenecks for a chic oversized look. Since the arrival of the belted blazer/belted everything trend, it’s so much easier to layer outerwear pieces in a flattering way. I’m not super tall, so I’ve always been a tad conscious of layering pieces together that just make me resemble a snow ball – who knew a simple belted feature would be all the confidence I needed to make it work…

Whether your a jeans or a trousers kind of person, my first tip for making this kind of look work would be to opt for a thin turtle neck piece on top. You can even wear thermals underneath if you’re heading somewhere especially baltic. This way, you have your basic foundation to start layering other pieces on top – the base layer of your painting that you can now play around with. I opted for a khaki turtle neck to bring out the green in the outer layers…

SHOP BASE LAYERS

For the second layer, I went with a vintage checked blazer that I’ve been itching to wear since Shop Suki kindly sent it to me. It’s exactly what my blazer collection was lacking because it’s such a thin piece. This means I can layer it underneath other blazers with coats on top, or I can wear it alone with some tailored trousers and heels as part of an evening look. I really can’t recommend having a piece like this in your collection more at this time of year – wear a chunky gold necklace and earrings with it for a sleek evening event look, or do what I’ve done here and use it as extra insulation underneath your favourite oversized blazer…

SHOP MIDDLE LAYERS

What could possibly be next in this very basic lesson in layers I hear you ask? Well, it’s none other than the WeekDay blazer that I’ve been wearing to death this winter. It’s possibly one of the best blazers I’ve ever owned – such a beautiful moss green shade, and works perfectly with so many pieces in my wardrobe! It has the ideal boxy fit to work with in harmony with an outfit like this…

SHOP OVERSIZED OUTER LAYERS

I love how the base and outer layers are both complimenting shades of green, whilst the middle layer breaks everything up with a subtle check detailing and the added bonus of the waist tie. I’d love to recreate this look using neutrals and an oversized cord blazer – the possibilities really are endless. You could even use a belted cardigan if you aren’t feeling the whole double blazer thing…

Last but not least, accessories really have the power to transform any simple outfit – never underestimate a pair of gold loops or a patent cross body bag. My favourite bag brand at the moment has to be Chylak, a polish brand that caught my attention via Instagram. This is now the second bag I’ve purchased from them and I couldn’t be more pleased with the quality. I can only fit the essentials in this particular one, but it really does make cold weather attire look a little more ‘high fashion’ and put-together. Sometimes we just need that little boost to mentally prepare us for the day ahead, and I always find that interesting accessories keep me on my toes…
