BEHIND THE SCENES | MIKAELA LYONS

As promised, I wanted to create a little behind the scenes style post with some further information on everything that went into The Prettiest Star collection. Just incase any of you were interested in the ethical practices, and some more details about how the collection was put together in general. This being my first design collaboration, a lot of this I learnt as we went along, and they are definitely practices that I want to adopt in other areas of my life. It’s so important to try and be more mindful about the way we consume and create, and little changes go a very long way…

A JEWELLERY COLLECTION | MIKAELA LYONS

This post has been a long time coming, and I’m so so excited that I finally get to share what I’ve been working on with Mikaela Lyons behind the blogging scenes. As many of you will be aware, I have a huge admiration for gold jewellery, and most of the pieces that I own, I wear on daily repeat. Good quality gold jewellery has become a huge part of my personal style, and an aspect that I can’t ever see fading. My love for chunky gold accessories very much came from my Grandparents on my mums side – they would wear these amazing antique pieces that I would be memorised by, and I loved that my Gran wore bold pieces, rather than the usual delicate jewellery that seemed to be available for most women…

AN AUTUMNAL NIGHT OUT

I thought I would share something I don’t do all that often on here, and style up an outfit that I might wear for an autumnal night out. I don’t tend to have as many nights out as I used to (Grandma over here), but the love of dressing up and getting ready with friends is something that I’ll never tire of. I’m very much guilty of wearing ‘jeans and a nice top’ whenever I get asked to go out for drinks – I’m a child of the Nineties, and Manchester is pretty low maintenance when it comes to outfit expectations (praise be). I don’t tend to go anywhere that requires me to dress up real fancy, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t make an effort sometimes…

FOR THE LOVE OF CHECK TROUSERS

At this time of year I tend to get myself stuck in a bit of a vintage jeans and a jumper shaped rut. There’s nothing wrong with having an autumn uniform that works, but I can’t imagine it’s very inspiring for you guys to keep seeing the same combination over and over again. Plus, I get bored of it too, and I end up just gravitating towards it out of comfort – a bad blogger habit indeed, and one that I’m forever trying to break. I find that the best way to cut back on the old denim addiction is to introduce a pair of statement trousers…

A SUBTLE WAY TO DO SPORTS LUXE

I usually avoid anything ‘sporty looking’ at all costs – it doesn’t tend to suit me, and I tend to just feel like the living embodiment of the phrase ‘all the gear and no idea’. It takes me back to ill fitting gym attire, and basically bad memories of injuring myself in an attempt to be remotely active. That was until Finery sent me these dream navy trousers with a simple stripe down the sides – classic enough to tie in with the way I like to dress, with a slightly sports luxe edge that sort of makes me feel like a Spice GirlThe latter being a comparison that I can’t ever really be mad at?…

CASUAL NINETIES

At this time of year, I find myself reaching for those simple outfits that feel like an oversized hug. High waist denim, slouchy t-shirts, and the biggest jacket I can find to throw on top. It’s the transitional phase that still has most of us figuring out what we want our wardrobe to look like for the season ahead. So far, lots of cord, snake print, and brown tones all seem to be the theme when I glance at mine. Having shorter hair definitely makes me more adventurous with my outfits, and I’m finding that I have way more fun playing with different shapes and colours…

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH OVERSIZED

I’ve gravitated towards oversized pieces for as long as I can remember. They are loose fitting, comfortable, and hey, probably fit my boyfriend too. I’ve never met an oversized shirt that I didn’t like, and there’s something very romantic about an oversized blazer thrown over a little dressIt’s that juxtaposition of looks that I refer to time and time again, and one that often creates the balance in an outfit that feels like home. Over the years, I’ve utilised oversized pieces for many different reasons – sometimes because of a favourite film character I’ve become obsessed with, and other times because of the relationship I have with my body…

THIS TIME OF YEAR

Around this time every year I start to feel a little funny about the industry that I’ve found myself contributing to – fashion month comes around, and always seems to encourage the same feelings of inadequacy. Just a disclaimer, this won’t be one of those posts slagging of fashion week and those that choose to attend, but I thought it might be interesting to explore the way I feel, as I’m sure I won’t be alone. There’s something about fashion week that feels very elite and vacuous from the outside, but at the same time, I adore seeing glimpses of my favourite designers via the likes of Instagram stories. It’s this love/hate relationship with the fashion industry that always leaves me with the same internal conflict – why am I not making more effort to go to fashion week?…

A GINGHAM SUNDRESS FOR AUTUMN

September and October happen to be two of my favourite months to dress for – the weather generally starts getting a bit cooler, and it starts to become acceptable to add a cardigan to every ensemble. However, it can be quite an overwhelming time of year in terms of newness, it feels impossible to avoid the endless sea of knitwear and ankle boots when scrolling on InstagramIt can be hard to figure out what you want your staples for the season ahead to be, and when to part with your hard earned dollar…

SOCIAL MEDIA VS PERSONAL STYLE

I wanted to sit down and just type freely about my thoughts on personal style today – particularly the impact that social media has on the way we all like to dress. Admittedly, this topic was inspired by the very Realisation Par skirt that I’m wearing throughout this post, a highly coveted ‘cool girl’ brand that creates silk pieces that Instagram goes crazy for. I remember this particular skirt coming into stock and it reminding me of a leopard blouse that I used to sport back when I was at university – should I?  I thought to myself, letting my mind wander back to all the bad leopard print I’d worn before…
